Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), a prominent venture capital firm, is setting its sights on the future of gaming by announcing a $30 million investment initiative aimed at nurturing technology-focused gaming startups.
This move underscores the firm’s commitment to fostering innovation at the confluence of gaming and cutting-edge technologies such as AI, VR/AR, and Web3.
SPEEDRUN Program: A Gateway to Innovation
The investment will be channeled through a16z’s early-stage accelerator, the SPEEDRUN program, over the next 45 days.
According to Andrew Chen, a general partner at a16z who manages the Games One Fund, the program is designed to support startups across various stages, from ideation to those with established products and revenue.

Each selected startup will receive $750,000 and participate in a 12-week program that offers access to capital, industry coaching, mentorship, and a vibrant community of ambitious founders.
High Competition, High Reward
Gaining entry into the SPEEDRUN program is highly competitive, with only about 1% of applicants making it into the last cohort.
Despite the stiff competition, the program has proven its value, with 80% of its first cohort’s companies securing further funding after Demo Day. Interested startups have until May 19 to apply for the program, which will run from July 29 to October 20, 2024, in Los Angeles, California.

Embracing a Wide Array of Gaming Innovations
The initiative is open to a broad spectrum of gaming innovations, including AI infrastructure, 3D tools, virtual and augmented reality, Web3 games, and gamified consumer apps. This inclusive approach reflects a16z’s vision for a diverse and dynamic gaming ecosystem.
Past Successes and the Future of Web3 Gaming
Andreessen Horowitz’s commitment to the gaming sector is evident in its $600 million Game Fund One, which includes investments in major players like Roblox, Sandbox, and Sky Mavis, creators of Axie Infinity.
The firm’s cryptocurrency division has also supported blockchain-based gaming startups such as Mythical Games, Yield Guild Games, Azra Games, and others.
With the Web3 gaming market expected to grow from $154 billion to $614 billion by 2030, a16z’s latest investment initiative positions the firm at the forefront of supporting the next wave of gaming innovation.
As the industry continues to evolve, a16z’s SPEEDRUN program represents a pivotal opportunity for startups at the intersection of technology and gaming to shape the future of this rapidly expanding market.
